Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, two of Australia’s most exciting tennis talents, are set to reunite for the 2025 Australian Open Men’s Doubles.
Known affectionately as the “Special Ks,” Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have developed a unique chemistry on the court that sets them apart from other doubles teams. In 2022, the duo won the Australian Open title – what will they achieve in 2025?
Memorable Moments from their 2022 Australian Open Campaign
Their journey to the title gained momentum in the second round where they stunned top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. Kia Arena became their stage for most matches, buzzing with packed crowds and electric energy.
In the final, they defeated fellow Aussies Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell (7-5, 6-4). It was a historic final being the first all-Australian men’s doubles final at the tournament since 1980.
An Electric Atmosphere – a Perfect Match for their Tennis
Kyrgios and Kokkinakis’s playing style combines powerful serves, deft volleys, and an instinctive understanding of each other’s movements. This synergy was on full display during their victorious run at the 2022 Australian Open, where they showcased their ability to entertain while delivering high-level tennis.
Their journey to the title as the first wildcard duo to win in the Open Era was filled with dramatic comebacks and bold shot-making. The atmosphere at their matches was electric, with raucous fans shouting “siu” and cheering as if at a football match. While this enthusiasm sparked debates about appropriate tennis etiquette, it undeniably contributed to the unique spectacle of their performances.
Anticipation for the 2025 Australian Open
As the 2025 Australian Open approaches, expectations are high. They’re excited about teaming up again, but it’s not without its challenges. Kyrgios is coming back from knee and wrist injuries that have kept him off the court since October 2022, while Kokkinakis has made it clear that singles is still his top priority, with doubles taking a back seat.
Add in the physical demands of playing both singles and doubles in a Grand Slam, and it’s clear they’ll have a lot to balance if they want to recreate the magic from 2022 on court.
Despite these challenges, the duo’s return to Melbourne Park promises to be “one last time” according to Kyrgios’s Instagram announcement.
