The Australian Open 2025 has begun with a remarkable milestone for British tennis, as six players advanced to the second round. The opening round delivered intense matches and standout performances from the British contingent.

Jack Draper, the British No. 1 and 15th seed, faced Argentina’s Mariano Navone in a demanding five-set encounter. Despite 88 unforced errors and trailing two sets to one, Draper demonstrated remarkable endurance to prevail 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The match, lasting over four hours, marked the longest of his career. Draper continued his strong start by defeating Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in another five-set thriller in the second round, securing a 6-7(3), 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win amidst a challenging atmosphere with a partisan crowd.

In her first-round match, Emma Raducanu, ranked 60th globally, faced 26th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. Despite serving challenges, including 15 double faults, Raducanu secured a straight-sets victory with two tiebreaks, 7-6(4), 7-6(2). This marked her first progression beyond the opening round at the Australian Open, having been eliminated in the second round in the previous three years.

British No. 1 Katie Boulter, seeded 22nd, fought a three-set battle against Canada’s Rebecca Marino. Boulter clinched the first set 6-4, but Marino responded to take the second set 6-3. In a tightly contested final set, Boulter’s resilience secured a 7-5 victory, contributing to the historic achievement of six British players reaching the second round.

Jacob Fearnley, making his Grand Slam main draw debut, caused a significant upset by defeating Australia’s Nick Kyrgios in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-3, 7-6(2). Despite facing a vocal home crowd, the 23-year-old Scot displayed remarkable composure to secure his memorable victory.

Jodie Burrage achieved her first Australian Open main draw victory by defeating France’s Leolia Jeanjean 6-2, 6-4. This win marked a significant milestone, especially after her 2024 debut, where she lost in the first round to Germany’s Tamara Korpatsch despite taking the opening set.

Harriet Dart, who entered the tournament as a lucky loser, showcased her trademark grit in a three-set match against Croatia’s Jana Fett. She emerged victorious with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(7) win, demonstrating grit in the final set tiebreak to secure her progression.

The 2025 Australian Open begins on Sunday, 12 January, marking the first Grand Slam of the season. Qualifying rounds started on 6 January, allowing lower-ranked players a chance to join the main draws, which each feature 128 competitors. This year’s tournament again extends to 15 days, aiming to reduce late-night finishes. The women’s singles final takes place on Saturday, 25 January, followed by the men’s final on Sunday, 26 January.

A major storyline is Aryna Sabalenka’s bid for a third consecutive women’s singles title, something not done since Martina Hingis’s run from 1997 to 1999. She will face strong challenges from players such as Iga Swiatek, who returns after a brief doping suspension, and the in-form Coco Gauff, fresh from a United Cup victory with Team USA. Nick Kyrgios is hoping to compete at his home Slam for the first time since 2022 but faces uncertainty due to an abdominal strain.

In the men’s event, defending champion Jannik Sinner aims to replicate his remarkable 2024 success, while he continues to address a doping-related appeal from WADA. Despite these off-court issues, Sinner enters Melbourne Park buoyed by last season’s achievements, which included a US Open title and a Davis Cup triumph for Italy. Top seed Sinner has a possible quarter-final date with Alex de Minaur and could meet Taylor Fritz in a repeat of last year’s US Open final.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic returns as a 10-time champion, joined by new coach Andy Murray. Seeded seventh, Djokovic lines up for a potential quarter-final showdown with Carlos Alcaraz, who begins his campaign against Alexander Shevchenko. Many will be watching to see how Alcaraz fares, having yet to play a competitive match in 2025, and whether Djokovic’s new coaching arrangement rekindles the Serb’s dominance on hard courts.

Key Dates & Tournament Schedule

Match schedules in Melbourne are divided into day and night sessions, starting at 11:00 local time (midnight GMT) for outer courts and 12:00 local time (01:00 GMT) on show courts. Night sessions begin at 19:00 (08:00 GMT). Prize money continues to rise, with a record 96.5m Australian dollars (£48m) on offer. Both men’s and women’s singles champions receive 3.5m Australian dollars (£1.7m) each.

With its blend of emerging talent, returning champions, and off-court storylines, the Australian Open 2025 promises compelling matches from first ball to last. Fans worldwide will be tracking Sabalenka’s title defence, Djokovic’s search for major number 25, and Sinner’s attempt to hold off rivals while under ongoing scrutiny. All eyes will be on Melbourne Park to see who seizes the season’s opening Grand Slam crown.

How can you watch the Australian Open 2025?

The BBC will provide extensive coverage throughout the fortnight, including daily live text commentaries on the BBC Sport website and app, with BBC 5 Sports Extra offering radio broadcasts from 07:00 GMT. Meanwhile, US tennis fans can follow the 2025 Australian Open on ESPN, ESPN2, ABC, and ESPN Deportes, or stream matches live through platforms like ESPN+ (covering all 15 courts), Hulu + Live TV, and FuboTV. The women’s and men’s finals will air on BBC Radio 5 Live with expert commentary from Pat Cash and Annabel Croft, while US audiences can catch the finals on ESPN, with over 240 hours of live coverage provided throughout the tournament. Both UK and US viewers can expect regular updates, interviews, and expert analysis as the draws unfold.

As the tennis season kicks off on Boxing Day, the United Cup is set to make waves with its unique format and exciting new rules.

This mixed team format of the event, combined with the new timeout rule may change the dynamics of the matches as they unfold.

Tournament Overview

The United Cup is a prestigious mixed team tennis event featuring competitors from 18 countries, divided into six groups of three players each. Scheduled to take place in Sydney and Perth, Australia, the tournament runs from December 26, 2024, to January 5, 2025. This format not only fosters national pride but also brings together some of the best players in the world, creating an electrifying, Davis-Cup-like atmosphere for fans and players alike.

With top-seeded teams including the United States, led by stars like Coco Gauff, Taylor Fritz, and Danielle Collins, the competition promises to be fierce. Other notable players such as Iga Swiatek, Alexander Zverev, and Jasmine Paolini will also be vying for glory, making this event a must-watch for tennis fans.

Understanding the Timeout Rule

One of the most significant innovations for the 2025 United Cup is the introduction of a timeout rule during mixed doubles matches. Teams can now call a 60-second timeout when their side is serving, allowing for strategic discussions. However, this timeout cannot be called between the first and second serves, ensuring that the flow of the game remains intact.

During the timeout, teams must gather in the designated team zone, and players have 25 seconds to resume play once the timeout ends. This rule aims to enhance the strategic aspect of the game, giving teams the opportunity to reassess their tactics and potentially shift the momentum of a match. Tournament Director Stephen Farrow has highlighted the importance of this innovation, suggesting that it will add a new layer of excitement and strategy to the competition.

Schedule and Coverage

You can catch all the action of the United Cup daily, with coverage available in the UK on Sky Sports Tennis or the Tennis Channel. If you’re in the US, tune in exclusively on the Tennis Channel or its streaming service. Looking for an affordable way to watch? Sling TV offers the Tennis Channel from $46 per month, with the Sports Extra add-on for an extra $11. Don’t miss a single moment!

John McEnroe’s career is filled with unforgettable moments that cemented his place as one of tennis’s all-time greats. With 77 singles titles, 77 doubles titles, he had a unique ability to dominate both the singles and doubles court.

Throughout this article, we review 5 of his most memorable matches.

1980 Wimbledon Final vs. Björn Borg

The 1980 Wimbledon Final between John McEnroe and Björn Borg is often mentioned as one of the greatest matches in tennis history. Borg, aiming for his fifth consecutive title, faced a determined McEnroe in a battle that showcased their contrasting styles—Borg’s cool composure versus McEnroe’s fiery intensity.

The match is best remembered for its dramatic fourth-set tiebreak, where McEnroe saved five championship points and prevailed 18-16 after 20 nail-biting minutes. Though McEnroe may have forced a deciding fifth set, Borg ultimately triumphed 1–6, 7–5, 6–3, 6–7(16–18), 8–6, in a marathon lasting 3 hours and 53 minutes.

1981 Wimbledon Meltdown

One of John McEnroe’s most unforgettable matches came in the first round of Wimbledon in 1981, where he faced Tom Gullikson. Played on Centre Court, this match is etched in tennis history not for its result—a straight-sets win for McEnroe (7-6, 7-5, 6-3)—but for the fiery outburst that defined his career. When a serve was called out, McEnroe erupted at chair umpire Edward James with the now-iconic phrase, “You cannot be serious!”

The moment captured his volatile passion and remains one of the most replayed clips in tennis, embodying McEnroe’s legendary personality.

Despite the controversy, he powered through the tournament to claim the Wimbledon title that year.

1984 US Open Victory

John McEnroe defeated Ivan Lendl in the final with a score of 6–3, 6–4, 6–1. This victory marked McEnroe’s fourth US Open singles title and his seventh and last major singles title overall.

McEnroe’s performance in 1984 was exceptional, as he compiled an 82–3 match record, which remains the highest single-season win rate of the Open Era.

1984 Wimbledon Final vs Jimmy Connors

McEnroe and Connors had a fierce rivalry that often led to intense matches. In the 1984 Wimbledon final, McEnroe dominated Connors with a score of 6-1, 6-1, 6-2, which is considered by many to be one of the best performances in a Wimbledon final.

Their rivalry was also marked by confrontations, such as the incident during the 1982 Michelob Light Challenge final in Rosemont, Illinois, where they almost came to blows.

1981 US Open Championship

In the 1981 US Open final, John McEnroe defeated Björn Borg with a score of 4–6, 6–2, 6–4, 6–3.

This victory marked McEnroe’s third US Open singles title and fourth major singles title overall. Notably, this final would be Borg’s last major appearance before his retirement from the sport.

Roger Federer is celebrated as one of the greatest players of all time. His remarkable career – that began in 1998, spanning 24 years and over 1,500 matches have left an indelible mark on tennis and beyond.

In this blog, we’ll be taking a look back at Federer’s on (and off-court) achievements.

Roger Federer’s career highlights

Federer’s illustrious tennis journey is defined by extraordinary accomplishments. He claimed 20 Grand Slam singles titles, including a record eight Wimbledon victories (2003–2007, 2009, 2012, 2017), six Australian Open titles (2004, 2006–2007, 2010, 2017, 2018), five U.S. Open titles (2004–2008), and one French Open title (2009).

Federer held the world No. 1 ranking for a total of 310 weeks, including an unprecedented 237 consecutive weeks, and finished as the year-end No. 1 five times. These achievements solidify his place among the legends of the sport.

Early life and introduction to tennis

Born on 8 August 1981 in Basel, Switzerland, Roger Federer began playing tennis at a young age and turned professional in 1998. His breakthrough came in 2003, when he won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, becoming the first Swiss man to achieve this milestone.

Off the court, Federer’s life is as remarkable as his career. Multilingual in Swiss-German, English, German, and French, he is married to former tennis player Mirka Vavrinec, with whom he has four children: twin girls Charlene Riva and Myla Rose, and twin boys Leo and Lenny. Federer announced his retirement from professional tennis in September 2022, marking the end of a career spanning more than two decades.

Style that redefined tennis

Federer’s playing style is a masterclass in versatility and grace. His fluid movement across the court, coupled with a forehand renowned for its combination of power and finesse, and a single-handed backhand that offers unpredictability, set him apart.

His serve, deceptively effortless yet highly effective, often left opponents on the back foot. Over the years, Federer adapted his approach, transitioning from a serve-and-volley emphasis to a more aggressive baseline game. His ability to construct points with precision and read his opponents’ strategies further enhanced his reputation as a tactician of the highest order.

Iconic rivalries

Federer’s career was shaped by iconic rivalries that defined an era of modern tennis. His matches against Rafael Nadal spanned 15 years and 40 encounters, with Nadal leading 24-16, particularly excelling on clay courts. With Novak Djokovic, Federer shared another thrilling rivalry, competing 50 times with Djokovic leading 27-23, including numerous Grand Slam battles.

These rivalries were not only fiercely competitive but also marked by respect and admiration. Federer himself noted the distinct challenges each opponent presented, while Nadal described Federer as his “biggest rival.” Together, these rivalries elevated tennis to new heights, captivating fans worldwide.

A legacy beyond tennis

Federer’s impact extends far beyond the court. The Roger Federer Foundation, established in 2003, focuses on empowering underserved communities through education. Its initiatives have improved access to quality early learning for over 2.4 million children, particularly in Africa and Switzerland.

By investing in schools, training educators, and providing essential resources, Federer’s foundation exemplifies how sport can be a vehicle for meaningful, long-term change. His work underscores the belief that education is transformative and highlights his commitment to addressing global inequalities.

Roger Federer’s influence is profound, both as a tennis player and as a global brand. His career achievements, rivalries, and off-court contributions have inspired millions, ensuring his legacy endures as a champion of the sport and an advocate for positive change.

Andy Murray’s illustrious 20-year professional career came to a poignant conclusion at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he and partner Dan Evans exited in the quarter-finals of the men’s doubles. The British pair, who had thrilled fans with two dramatic comeback wins earlier in the tournament, were defeated by the American duo Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul, 6-2, 6-4.

Murray, seeking to add a fourth Olympic medal to his two singles golds (2012, 2016) and mixed doubles silver (2012), showed flashes of his trademark grit and determination. He and Evans saved match points to prolong the contest but ultimately could not find a way past the third seeds. For Evans, it marked his Olympic debut, while for Murray, it was a bittersweet end to one of the greatest careers the sport has ever seen.

Reflecting on his farewell match, Murray told the LTA: “I knew that moment was coming for the last few months. If it didn’t happen today, it was going to come in a few days’ time – I was ready for it. I’m happy with how it finished, I’m glad I got to go out here at the Olympics and finish on my terms, because at times over the last few years that wasn’t a certainty.”

Overcoming setbacks to bid farewell

Murray’s participation in Paris was in doubt after a back injury sustained at the cinch Championships earlier in the summer. Initially told he would miss Wimbledon and the Olympics, he worked tirelessly to rehabilitate and ensure he could compete at these cherished events.

“When I first went to have the scan on my back, I was told I wouldn’t be playing at the Olympics or Wimbledon,” Murray told the LTA. “So I feel lucky that I got that opportunity to play here and have some great matches and amazing memories.”

For Murray, the Olympics held a special place in his career. “I still had a dream this week,” he said, “that we had a chance of doing that (winning a medal) because physically I was able and Dan was playing really well. But we just didn’t play a good match tonight.”

The next chapter: Coaching Novak Djokovic in 2025

While Paris 2024 marked the end of Murray’s playing career, his influence on the game continues. In a surprising development, Murray has taken on a coaching role, beginning with Novak Djokovic at the 2025 Australian Open. The decision has already drawn attention across the tennis world, with fans and pundits speculating on the impact Murray’s strategic mind and wealth of experience will have on Djokovic’s game.

The pairing has historical resonance. Murray and Djokovic were fierce rivals during their careers, with Murray defeating Djokovic in two of his three Grand Slam triumphs—Wimbledon 2013 and the US Open 2012. Now, as coach and player, they are uniting in pursuit of further success.

Murray’s tactical acumen, honed through years of battling the game’s best, makes him a natural fit for the coaching world. For Djokovic, a partnership with someone who has both the expertise and insight into his strengths and weaknesses could prove to be a masterstroke.

A Legacy to be Proud Of

As the crowd at Roland Garros gave him a heartfelt ovation, Murray took a moment to reflect on his remarkable journey.

“I’m proud of my career, my achievements, and what I did in the sport,” he said in his interview with the LTA. “If I went back to the beginning of my career when I started playing in Scotland, no one standing here, myself included, my family, none of them would have expected that I would have gone on to do what I did.”

Murray also shared his gratitude for fans worldwide, acknowledging their role in his journey. “A huge thank you for all the support,” he said. “Whether that’s been in the UK or around the world – the support has been amazing. That’s one of the things I’ll hugely miss – playing in front of them and engaging with them is something I’ve really enjoyed.”

The Enduring Champion

Murray’s career, from his Grand Slam wins to his Olympic triumphs and Davis Cup heroics, is a testament to his grit, brilliance, and unrelenting love for tennis. As he steps into the next phase, whether in coaching, mentoring, or advocacy, his legacy remains one of inspiration for players and fans alike.

Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, two of Australia’s most exciting tennis talents, are set to reunite for the 2025 Australian Open Men’s Doubles.

Known affectionately as the “Special Ks,” Kyrgios and Kokkinakis have developed a unique chemistry on the court that sets them apart from other doubles teams. In 2022, the duo won the Australian Open title – what will they achieve in 2025?

Memorable Moments from their 2022 Australian Open Campaign

Their journey to the title gained momentum in the second round where they stunned top seeds Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. Kia Arena became their stage for most matches, buzzing with packed crowds and electric energy.

In the final, they defeated fellow Aussies Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell (7-5, 6-4). It was a historic final being the first all-Australian men’s doubles final at the tournament since 1980.

An Electric Atmosphere – a Perfect Match for their Tennis

Kyrgios and Kokkinakis’s playing style combines powerful serves, deft volleys, and an instinctive understanding of each other’s movements. This synergy was on full display during their victorious run at the 2022 Australian Open, where they showcased their ability to entertain while delivering high-level tennis.

Their journey to the title as the first wildcard duo to win in the Open Era was filled with dramatic comebacks and bold shot-making. The atmosphere at their matches was electric, with raucous fans shouting “siu” and cheering as if at a football match. While this enthusiasm sparked debates about appropriate tennis etiquette, it undeniably contributed to the unique spectacle of their performances.

Anticipation for the 2025 Australian Open

As the 2025 Australian Open approaches, expectations are high. They’re excited about teaming up again, but it’s not without its challenges. Kyrgios is coming back from knee and wrist injuries that have kept him off the court since October 2022, while Kokkinakis has made it clear that singles is still his top priority, with doubles taking a back seat.

Add in the physical demands of playing both singles and doubles in a Grand Slam, and it’s clear they’ll have a lot to balance if they want to recreate the magic from 2022 on court.

Despite these challenges, the duo’s return to Melbourne Park promises to be “one last time” according to Kyrgios’s Instagram announcement.
